Facebook Should Add A “Don’t Like” Button

In February, Facebook introduced a new feature called “Like”, which allows your friends or fans to tell you that they like the content you’re sharing.

The good thing about that button is that you can quickly let someone know that you enjoyed what he or she posted, but I know that the downside is that it creates less discussions, it’s easier to click on “Like” than expressing what you liked about the shared content with some words.

But what is truly missing is a “Don’t Like” button, I don’t know why Facebook hasn’t implemented such a feature yet.

For example, Depeche Mode has a page on Facebook. They’ve just announced the cancellation of some of their concerts in Brazil. And what’s really strange is that as of right now, 422 people “Liked” this on Facebook :

What does that mean? Are these people happy to hear that they won’t get to see the band?

Facebook tried to imitate Digg with its “Like” button, but I really think they should also add a “Don’t like” button, it will create more discussions and quickly allow posters to know the reaction of their friends/fans.

It will also help reducing the amount of shitty content that people share on Facebook 🙂

I Was About to Buy a Wi-Fi Phone and a New MP3 Player…

…but Apple just came up with their new Ipod touch. Good job, Steve, you’ve finally convinced me to buy an Ipod.

I was indeed looking to get a Wi-Fi capable cell phone to allow me to check my emails, read feeds, or check out Digg while on the go but without ruining myself with huge data costs. Plus, I live in Paris and there are more and more Wi-Fi spots here.

It was also the time for me to get a new MP3 player, since my old but cool 512MB Samsung YP-T7 Player (I love the fact that it’s so tiny!) can’t hold lots of albums.

Since the Ipod touch is Wi-Fi capable and has a 8GB or 16GB storage capability (which is more than enough for me), and is priced at $299 and $399, well, this gorgeous thing will be perfect for me.

I’ve also noted in the online presentation that the Ipod touch has a shortcut to Google. With this kind of partnership, Google has just won millions of wireless users of their search engine.

Email Tagging

I love tags, not the blog tags for services such as Technorati (which I’ll never use), but those like the ones used to save pages with Delicious.

Today, while searching an email in Outlook and realizing how painful it can be, I wonder if an email tagging service already exists, but didn’t found any. Wouldn’t be nice to have a delicious like service for Outlook and similar email applications? Or if you know a plug-in that already does that for Outlook, let me know!

Health care is high-priced, that’s why certain patients cannot order the medicines they need. Currently more than quoter of men aged 40 to 70 reported some degree of erectile difficulties. Of course most popular is Viagra. What about sexual dysfunctions and “questo link“? What is the most momentous information you have to study about “”? The very significant point you need look for is “”. A scientific research found that just 14 percent of patients taking Wellbutrin told about sexual dysfunction. If you get any prescription drugs like Viagra, check with a physician that they are healthy to take with your other remedies. Do not give Viagra or any medicament to anyone under 18 years old without medical advice.

Five Things You Didn’t Know About Me

Ok, Pierre and Joe both tagged me. Now I got to share 5 things about myself, please don’t laugh! 🙂

So, let’s see:

1. I got into SEO by chance. On the last year of my Bachelor degree in France (a year ago, in 2005), I had to do a final four-month internship. I always wanted to go to California, so I decided to try to do this internship over-there while my classmates would freeze their ass in France. So how did I manage to get my ass 6000 miles from my home? Well, I kinda spam over 1000 companies in California with emails that I’ve found on craiglist. I used an emailing software and within a few hours, I had sent 1000 emails to companies from San Diego, L.A. and San Francisco. The next day I had a few companies that were ok to hire me, I chose the one that was the closest to the beach. It was a SEO company located in Carlsbad, CA. So I basically learned SEO from scratch in Carlsbad, in the San Diego area, and from that day, I fell in love with both California and SEO 🙂

2. I love Rap. Mostly old school stuff such as Public Enemy, KRS One, A Tribe Called Quest, Slick Rick, Bone Thugs N Harmony or N.W.A (West Coast!)… My favorite rapper is 2pac, then comes Eazy-E.

3. I didn’t know how to swim until the age of 16, I’ve always been scared of the water, even if my sun sign is Pisces.

4. I was a born in France but my parents are Algerian (Kabyles) immigrants.

5. I’m a heavy weekend drinker, I really started to drink when I was in Dublin, and now even in Paris, I’m still drinking Guinness even if my friends keep making fun of me.

Ok, now I need to tag 5 people. So, let’s see. Wow!, everyone has already been tagged. Alright, so let’s pick 2 french guys: Arnaud, and Sébastien Billard. Let’s see what my friend Earl Grey has to say. I don’t know her personally, but let’s choose Natasha Robinson to add a girl to the list. And Mashhoor.

AOL Shuts Down Research Department

According to Greg Linden, AOL Research has been shutdown after the massive search data leak and the user privacy concern that it presented.

After only a month of existence, the AOL Research website has been closed.

The site had a nice list of publications and was aimed to allow researchers to share their ideas with others and help people understand search engines better. Too bad it didn’t last long…

Netconcepts report on the Long Tail of Natural Search

Stephan Spencer announced on his blog that his company, Netconcepts recently released a white paper entitled “Chasing The Long Tail of Natural Search.” The research was aimed to show E-Commerce managers why chasing the long tail of natural search was necessary to maximize traffic and conversions.

In “Chasing the Long Tail of Natural Search: How to Capture the Unbranded Keyword,” Netconcepts
attempts to provide insight to E-Commerce managers to quantify and capture their sites’ full natural
search potential. It’s a big opportunity for big sites. But how big is it?

The analysis was based on 1.2 unbranded natural search visits to 5 million pages across 25 merchant sites.

Here’s what an average “merchant’s long-tail profile” looks like:

  • Only 14% of indexed pages yield search traffic, generating 4.6 visitors per month from non-brand searches.
  • 189,000 brand searches are conducted every month.
  • Retailers generate 80% of search traffic from brand keywords and 20% from non-brand terms.
  • Total market potential for unbranded keyword traffic exceeds 7,000,000 searches per month — roughly 100 searches for every unique page, 38 times greater than total brand searches.

I’ve already downloaded the 17 page report and I must say that the research is really impressive and provides excellent conclusions. The pdf file is available here.

Google Sitemaps renamed Google Webmaster Central: new blog, new features, better communication

Vanessa Fox announced yesterday that Google Sitemaps has been renamed Google Webmaster Central. It’s not just a change of name, but rather a new platform to help webmasters maximize the crawl of their websites and also to make it easier for them to communicate with Google.

Google seems to be making serious efforts to improve communication with webmasters. Note that Vanessa Fox recently started a thread on WebMasterWorld where she invites members to ask question regarding Google crawling and indexing issues.

Our whole team is looking at better ways to communicate with webmasters, and the creating and submitting Sitemaps is just one small piece of that overall communication.

Google Webmaster Central comes with a new blog, a new Google Group, and new tools. New tools include a enhanced Crawl Report, Query Stats, Preferred Domain, an option that allows you to choose if you want to display the www. version of your site in the SERPS or the one without.
I invite you to read Rand’s Google Webmaster Central in-depth review to learn more about these new tools and see how they can be useful for your site(s).

I personnaly think some of these tools are very useful, for example the crawl report can help you spot urls that timed out when Google tried to crawl them or the “Preferred domain” option.
