Awesome Web Design for Less Than $1400

Would you like to have your website re-designed by a top-notch web designer for less than $1400? Would you also like to have your website seen by half a million people for free?

Ben Hunt from Web Design From Scratch is currently working on a project called “50 redesigns from scratch”. The project consists of redesigning 50 existing websites and then publish the work done in a book. The redesigned wesbsites will serve as examples of “web design mistakes” and illustrate several principles of web design.

Check out this example of a redesign done on www.sunhome.biz. The result is just stunning.
To be part of the project and submit your website, you need to contact WDFS and pay a one-off fee of £725 (or $1350):

We can only include a limited number of sites in the book. If you would like your site to be included, we’d love to hear from you.

A one-off fee of just £725 (around US$1,350) gets you:

  • A professional redesign of your site’s home page by Ben Hunt
  • Your site included in the book, and featured on this site, where it will be seen by like half a million people – guaranteeing great exposure
  • All graphics files of the new design you need to help you implement your new design

Web Design From Scratch being quite popular, this project will reach the ears of many people and the websites featured on the book will naturally be seen by thousands of people. That’s quite a low price for a great web 2.0 style redesign and free publicity.

If you want to be part of the project, check out this page (I hope Ben is still accepting websites).

Adhemas Batista: Gorgeous Design

Today, I came across Adhemas Batista’s website, a graphic designer based in Brazil whose work is just stunning. The guy is a 25 years old freelancer full of talent. He’s done commercial work for brands such as Mizuno, Symantec, Palm Treo or Johnnie Walker. His work also consists of book covers, typefaces and logos.

If you need inspiration or if you’re looking for an excellent graphic designer, check his website out!

Evaluate your CSS and HTML Knowledge

How good are you at CSS?

I came across an article that is both funny and accurate called Levels of CSS knowledge, from Emil Stenström. It lists 6 levels of CSS knowledge and explains how each one is affecting the web, from the average user to the most renowned web designers.

I love the sentence he used to describe those who are at level 0:

“CSS? Isn’t that a multiplayer game?”

lol, that’s exactly what one of my colleagues answered me yesterday when I asked him if he knew CSS.

456 Berea ST published a similar article for HTML, called Levels of HTML knowledge that is also very interesting.

16% of web sites still use frames

I visit hundreds of sites each week and I sometimes see a few websites that still use atrocious frames. But I didn’t know that the average number of websites using frames accross the Web was around 16% in 2006.

Security Space published a study called Technlogy Penetration Report that shows the penetration rate of a number of client side web technologies, including Javascript, CSS, or Frames. A more complete chart is available here.

The study was based on a sample of 1,358,991 web sites, so you can imagine that the numbers can be quite significant.

It’s interesting to see that 50% of all web sites now use CSS for their design, but it’s still very sad to read that 16% of web sites still use frames. I guess this just shows that many people still need to be educated if they want to make a good use of the search engines to get traffic.
