Confirmed: Microsoft Offers to Buy Yahoo! for $44.6 Billion

This day has come my friends. Microsoft just offered to buy Yahoo! for $44.6 Billion, or $31 a share. According to the press release:

Microsoft’s proposal would allow the Yahoo! shareholders to elect to receive cash or a fixed number of shares of Microsoft common stock, with the total consideration payable to Yahoo! shareholders consisting of one-half cash and one-half Microsoft common stock. The offer represents a 62 percent premium above the closing price of Yahoo! common stock on Jan. 31, 2008.

This could be huge and really shakes up the search industry. Go for it Yahoo! !!!

$44.6 that’s a lot of money. But i personally wouldn’t like to see Yahoo in Microsoft’s hands. Yahoo’s image would be hurt by this acquisition I think. Also, Microsoft and Yahoo have a lot of overlapping services (Such as news, Instant Messaging etc.) and are both weak in the search market if we compare them to Google.

Stay strong Yahoo! and keep your head up.

By my count, this will put Google’s search share at 54% and Microyahoosoft at 42%. More importantly, it will merge YSM with Adcenter and give Microsoft the backbone necessary to cut into Google’s advertising share. As well, Microsoft can take YPN and run with it because yahoo has only provided limited competition to Google in that department. All it will take for Microsoft to surpass Google after this deal is to poach a few search contracts with some big ISP’s and big sites and G will be looking up instead of down.
